Paper Sizes in Pixels
Paper sizes in pixels follow from the size in inches or millimeters times the resolution. The A series of ISO 216 starts at A0, which has an area of one square meter, and each size is half of the one before it. US sizes are Letter, Legal and Tabloid. An ID card (ID-1, ISO/IEC 7810) is 1011 x 638 pixels at 300 DPI.

Pixels to Inches Formula
The pixels to inches formula is inches = pixels divided by DPI. To go the other way, pixels = inches times DPI. For example, 1920 pixels at 96 DPI is 20 inches. The same 1920 pixels at 300 DPI are 6.4 inches. A pixel has no fixed size until you choose a resolution.
Inches to pixels works the same way. A 3 inch print at 300 DPI needs 900 pixels, and 8.5 inches at 300 DPI needs 2550 pixels. One inch is 2.54 centimeters, or 25.4 millimeters, which is how the centimeter and millimeter fields are worked out.

PPI Calculator and DPI
PPI means pixels per inch and describes screens and image files. DPI means dots per inch and describes printers more precisely. For image sizes people use both words for the same number, and this page does too. The PPI calculator finds the pixel density of a screen from its width and height in pixels and its diagonal in inches.
The formula is PPI = the square root of (width squared plus height squared), divided by the diagonal. A 1920 x 1080 screen with a 24 inch diagonal is 91.79 PPI, and a 3840 x 2160 screen with a 27 inch diagonal is 163.18 PPI. Type that PPI into the Resolution field to see how large something is on that screen.
CSS and web browsers define 1 inch as 96 pixels, so 96 is the reference for web and screen layouts. A phone or high-resolution display packs several device pixels into one CSS pixel, so its real density is usually not 96.
The calculator does math only. It does not open an image, read the DPI stored in a file, or resize a picture. The answer depends on the resolution you choose, and resolution runs from 1 to 10,000 DPI. Paper sizes are rounded to whole pixels, so other tables can differ by one pixel. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the pixels by the resolution in DPI. For example, 1920 pixels at 96 DPI is 20 inches, and at 300 DPI it is 6.4 inches. Type the pixels into the calculator, pick a resolution, and the inches, centimeters and millimeters update as you type.
How many pixels is 8.5 x 11 inches?
8.5 x 11 inches is 2550 x 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, which is the common size for print. At 150 DPI it is 1275 x 1650 pixels, and at 96 DPI it is 816 x 1056 pixels. Multiply each side in inches by the DPI to get the pixels.
What is A4 size in pixels?
A4 is 2480 x 3508 pixels at 300 DPI, 1240 x 1754 pixels at 150 DPI and 794 x 1123 pixels at 96 DPI. A4 paper is 210 x 297 mm. The exact size at 300 DPI is 2480.31 x 3507.87 pixels, rounded to whole pixels.
How do I convert inches to pixels?
Multiply the inches by the resolution in DPI. A 3 inch width at 300 DPI is 900 pixels, and 8.5 inches at 300 DPI is 2550 pixels. Type the inches into the calculator, choose a DPI, and the pixels appear in the first field.
How many pixels are in an inch?
It depends on the resolution. There are 96 pixels in an inch in CSS and web browsers, and 300 pixels in an inch of an image made for print at 300 DPI. A pixel has no fixed physical size, so the number of pixels in an inch is the DPI you choose.
How do I calculate PPI?
Take the square root of the width in pixels squared plus the height in pixels squared, then divide by the screen diagonal in inches. A 1920 x 1080 screen with a 24 inch diagonal is 91.79 PPI. The PPI calculator on this page does it as you type.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
For image sizes, people use them for the same number. PPI means pixels per inch and describes screens and image files. DPI means dots per inch and describes printers more precisely. A 300 DPI print and a 300 PPI image both give 300 pixels for each inch.
